Server-based Intranet

The server-based solution is typically relegated to out-of-the-box type software and is also the realm of the Intranet developer. For the purposes of this website I do not examine the bespoke developers other than to say these services will typically be much more expensive than commercially available solutions, often by an order of magnitude.

Server-based solutions require some forethought because there is almost certainly going to be some ramification to other areas of your business. Specifically a server-based Intranet will require technical expertise (often in-house staffing) for the configuration, management, and maintenance of the Intranet system. A server-based system will also often require dedication and/or expansion of technical infrastructure (such as network / server hardware and resources).

A potential advantage of server-based is that it is a means to gain direct control over set-up and security – though this is only an advantage if you have the available resources and maintenance may be negatively affected unless a company has budgeted for this. Another advantage may be that you have direct access to source code and can modify the software to your needs. Again, only an advantage if you happen to work closely with a software developer that can code in the required language. More often this type of work is best left with the original developer, if that is an option.
