Wiki group of Intranet software developers![]() Wiki group of Intranet software developers have put their faith in a form of content management has its place but to many the Wiki stance implies limitations and our opinion is that Wiki-based Intranets are not future proof; meaning that extensibility is restricted by the nature of the platform and the lack of features. I have seen Intranet marketing claims that the Wiki platforms will ‘allow your content contributors to rise up and shine’… is this necessarily a good thing? Is the value of an employee in any way related to how well he can throw polish on an article? I have tried demo versions of the more popular Wiki offerings and my impression is that the emphasis is too heavy on the iterative content creation and not enough emphasis on many of the other fundamentals of an effective Intranet. If your organization places a priority on having many editors able to input on content then a Wiki may be a solution. Studies tell us though that most organizations prefer to limit the user ability to edit content and to control the creation of new content, making a content management system (CMS) the more practical alternative. |
